VNT Turbo Rebuilds - Cheap!         General TDi Information         TDi's and Vegoil         TDi Cambelts & Diagnostics

The VW TDi engine is a remarkable engine, some would say unequalled.  It has rally records, fuel economy records, performance records and a reputation for build quality and reliability.  It's also pretty good to work on!  These comments in particular apply to the TDi's we offer services for, the 90hp and 110hp 1.9 litre units made between 1995 and 2000 (Skoda up to 2003).  The later PD engine comes out of the factor with more power but reduced economy (5-10% typical) and some would say an inferior fuel system.  The unit injectors are expensive to replace and don't like alternative fuels, though they generally function well.  There is a wealth of information on this engine via TDiClub including fuel economy records and many 200+hp engines (little work is needed to bring a VW TDi up to the 170-200hp).  One of our Octavia's returns 55mpg overall and on a run easily manages 67mpg!  All in a good sized family vehicle that can do nearly 130mph, remarkable.

The engine was fitted into many diesel Audi, VW, Seat, Skoda (these brands are one company, the VW group known as VAG) and Ford (Galaxy) vehicles.  The most reliable and best built of the VW group are the Skoda Octavia models, made in a newer  Czech plant on a larger Golf platform they rate a fraction below the highest rating car (Lexus) for reliability, comfortably beating all other cars it's size and beating the larger Passat and Audi A4 by a mile.  "In 2006 Warranty Direct, a UK-based provider of mechanical warranties for used cars, rated Škoda the top manufacturer (above Mazda and Honda), while Audi came seventh from bottom. The Octavia specifically had a reliability index of 32.74 (lower being more reliable) while the Golf produced over the same period was 87.28 and the Audi A3 99.43".  That said, all the VW group cars are good cars and some of the best out there!

Modern vehicles, like the VW group TDi (and petrol) models are run by a central car computer.  These days this also controls the other workings of the car such as locking, lights and heating and even interfaces with the radio and the information display on the dash.  Cars are not adjusted with spanners and screwdriver, rather the mechanic 'talks' to the vehicle via interfacing a computer with the car computer.  Settings can be altered, adjustments made and fault codes can be read and cleared.  This is a specialised area that most garages can't do, at best having a clunky minimalist fault code reader which does not give full access to the car computer.  Dealers have the equipment, but charge a fortune for it and some of the apprentices that staff them often don't make a good job of understanding how to use computerised kit (so the stories we hear seem to indicate).
